Couples often ask me whether they should elope or have a traditional wedding, and after photographing both, I always tell them the same thing: there’s no single right answer, only what feels right for the two of you.
An elopement, to me, is a small and intentional ceremony, often just the two of you or with a few close people, in a place that truly means something. It’s less about scale and more about being fully present.
I love how eloping usually costs less, gives you the freedom to choose a breathtaking or remote setting, and creates a day that feels unhurried and deeply personal. The trade-off is that not everyone you love will be there to witness the moment in person.
A traditional wedding, on the other hand, lets you celebrate with your whole community at once, though it usually comes with more planning, higher costs, and a fuller schedule that can make the day move quickly.
From behind my camera, the two feel completely different. At an elopement I have time for the quiet, in-between moments, like a nervous laugh before your vows or the two of you alone on a cliffside. At a traditional wedding I’m capturing energy, the full room, the speeches, the dancing.
If you long for intimacy, flexibility, and a slower pace, I’d lean you toward an elopement. If having everyone you love in one place matters most, a traditional wedding is worth every bit of the planning.
Whichever you choose, I’d be honored to be the one to document it for you.
FAQ
Is eloping cheaper than a traditional wedding? Usually yes, often by quite a lot.
Can family come to an elopement? Of course, many of my couples invite a small group, sometimes called a micro-wedding.
How is photographing an elopement different from a wedding? With an elopement I have more time for quiet, intimate moments, while a wedding is about capturing a wider range across a busier day.
