Every year the conversations I have with couples shift a little, and I find it fascinating. Here’s what couples planning 2027 weddings are actually asking me for, and my honest opinion on each of these trends.

Documentary storytelling is still what couples want most. The requests I get now are almost always for real, unposed moments rather than long lists of arranged group shots. Couples want to look back and remember how the day actually felt, not how well they held a pose.

Film and grain are being asked for on purpose. For years, softness and grain were things photographers apologised for. Now couples request them, because that texture feels warm and timeless in a way that very clean digital work sometimes doesn’t. I shoot film myself and I love this shift.

Editorial portraits blended with candid coverage. The trend I see most clearly for 2027 is couples wanting both: a handful of considered, magazine-quality portraits alongside genuine documentary coverage of everything else. It’s a lovely balance, and it’s how I like to work.

Motion is becoming part of the story. More couples are asking about short films or a few seconds of movement alongside their photos, because motion captures voices and laughter in a way stills can’t.

Smaller, slower celebrations. Elopements and micro-weddings are no longer the exception. Couples are choosing fewer guests, longer dinners, and weekday dates so they can actually be present.

Unplugged ceremonies. More couples are asking guests to put phones away, which honestly helps me enormously. Clear sightlines and faces that aren’t lit by screens make for far better photographs.

My honest take: chase the trends that match how you actually want to feel on your day, not the ones that photograph well on a feed. Documentary coverage, a little film, and a slower schedule will still look beautiful in twenty years.

FAQ

What is the biggest wedding photography trend for 2027? Documentary, unposed storytelling blended with a few editorial portraits.

Is film photography still popular in 2027? Yes, and it’s growing. Couples are actively requesting film for its texture and timeless feel.

Should I book a videographer too? If voices and movement matter to you, yes. Many couples now book photo and motion together.
